Consecrating Ourselves to St Joseph

Pope Francis declared that this year should be dedicated to St Joseph, our heavenly protector.

Following the Holy Father’s dedication of this year to St Joseph, Fr Joe and Fr Ryan invite you to join them in consecrating yourselves to our heavenly protector and guide during Lent 2021.

On Saturday 20th February at 1pm, we will celebrate a Mass in the cathedral, after which we will begin our preparations for the consecration. Simply continue watching the livestream after Mass has ended to participate.

We will light candles at the statue of St Joseph for those who plan to consecrate themselves to him. If you intend to join us for this time of preparation and consecration, please send us your names and intentions by posting them through the letterbox at the house or by email; we will light a candle for your intentions. If you would like to make an offering, please include this when you send us your names and intentions.

Following this first meeting, we will continue to prepare for the consecration at 6pm on Wednesday evenings in Lent. While adoring the Blessed Sacrament, we will lead the time of preparation. You are warmly encouraged to join us by watching the livestream of these meetings on Facebook and YouTube.

After 33 days, at the final meeting on Wednesday 24th March, we will conclude our time of preparation by consecrating ourselves and St Mirin’s Cathedral parish to St Joseph.

Each Wednesday evening, we will pray the prayer to St Joseph that has been promoted by Pope Francis:

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil.  Amen.

On each of the 33 days, please pray this prayer, asking St Joseph to hear the petitions of all those who are preparing to consecrate themselves to him:

O blessed St Joseph, tender hearted father, faithful guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of God, I pray to you to join with us in praising God the Father through His divine Son, who died on the Cross and rose again to give us sinners new life. Through the holy name of Jesus, pray with us that we may obtain from the eternal Father the favours we ask for. We have been unfaithful to the unfailing love of God the Father; beg of Jesus mercy for us His brothers and sisters. Amid the splendours of God’s loving presence, do not forget the sorrows of those who suffer, those who pray, those who weep. By your prayers and those of your most holy spouse, Our Blessed Lady, may the love of Jesus answer our call of confident hope. Amen.

At each online event, we will begin by praying the Veni, Sancte Spiritus and we will end by praying the Litany to St Joseph. The words of both are to be found below.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come,
From thy bright heav’nly throne,
Come take possession of our souls,
And make them all thy own.

Thou who art called the Paraclete,
Best gift of God above,
The living spring, the living fire,
Sweet unction and true love.

Thou who art sev’nfold in thy grace,
Finger of God’s right hand
His promise teaching little ones
To speak and understand.

O guide our minds with thy blessed light,
With love our hearts inflame;
And with thy strength, which ne’r decays
Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our deadly foe;
True peace unto us bring;
And through all perils lead us safe
Beneath thy sacred wing.

Through thee may we the Father know,
Through thee the eternal Son,
And thee, the Spirit of them both,
Thrice-blessed Three in One.

All glory to the Father be,
With his coequal Son;
The same to thee, great Paraclete,
While endless ages run.
Amen.
